About us.

Bay of Plenty Hockey Association (BOP Hockey) is the regional governing body for hockey in the Bay of Plenty. We work in partnership with our three sub-associations to support, develop and grow the sport across the region.

Our vision:

“To inspire an environment of opportunity, growth and whanaungatanga so we are a thriving hockey community”.

Strategic plan.

Our 2024 - 2026 strategic plan has four Strategic Priorities:

1. Capability / Governance

2. Whanaungatanga / Relationships

3. Growth / Pathways

4. Sustainability

Our Structure.

Bay of Plenty Hockey Association operates with a collaborative model that combines strong local delivery with coordinated regional leadership:

  • Board of Directors.

The Association is governed by a board of up to 9 directors, which are made up of:

6 elected directors (2 nominated and elected from each of the three sub-associations)

Up to 3 additional directors appointed by the board for specific skills or expertise

This structure gives each area strong representation while allowing regional decisions to be made efficiently and with specialist input when required.

  • Lead Association (Bay of Plenty Hockey Association)

Responsible for overall strategy, funding, representative programmes, and the link with Hockey New Zealand.

Bay of Plenty Hockey Association directly organises and runs the secondary school competition across the entire region.

  • Sub-Associations

Day-to-day hockey, particularly at primary and intermediate level, is delivered by our three independent sub-associations through their own local competitions, development programmes and community activities.

    Our 3 Sub associations are:

    • Rotorua Hockey Association

    • Taupō Hockey Association

    • Whakatāne Hockey Association

  • Working Together.

By combining local expertise and passion from the sub-associations with coordinated regional support and secondary school management from BOP Hockey, we provide clear pathways and quality opportunities for players, coaches, officials and volunteers – from grassroots through to representative level.

Whether you’re starting out at primary school, competing in secondary or senior hockey, or simply love being part of the hockey community, there’s a place for you here.

About our Uniform.

Our Player Kit: A Story Woven Into Every Pattern

You may have noticed the striking Māori design featured on the front of our player uniforms. This artwork is far more than a visual feature, it’s a collection of stories, values, and connections unique to our region and our organisation.

Created by Hohua Mohi of Kupapa Ink, Rotorua, the design incorporates a series of patterns that each carry their own meaning. These elements reflect our environment, our history, our responsibilities as players, and the support we carry from our whānau and community. Together, they form a narrative that honours both where we come from and how we conduct ourselves on and off the turf.

Below, you’ll find the meanings behind each element of the design and how they connect to our identity as Bay of Plenty Hockey.

This design links to one of our unique environments in the BOP the geothermal activity, this depiction can be found in many marae around the BOP (Waiariki area)

This pattern represents A backbone or Tree’s trunk that symbolises the foundation strength and support that the wearer possesses from the area, friends and family back home when playing in the uniform.

This pattern can be found in native forrest and represents the legacy of BOP Hockey and that members have a responsibility to acknowledge our history, their time playing and the future generations of players through their behaviour while wearing the shirt.

This pattern represents travel or movement and reminds the wearer of the support they have back home (from the friends and family) when travelling away for tournaments our games.

These 2 designs are meant to represent the god of war and peace and the fact that the players need to have respect for the qualities of both deities. Strength/power and competitiveness of war but also the humility/care and respect of peace. This refers to behaviour both on and off the turf

This pattern represents movement and speed/efficiency of movement and is meant to enhance the wearers movement while wearing the jersey.

This pattern represents the shape of a hammerhead shark which symbolises perseverance in your sporting endeavours
