Baywide Hockey Final Round Preview
Title Deciders & Local Pride on the Line!
The 2026 Baywide competition reaches its conclusion this weekend with the final round of matches. After a competitive local round full of goals, comebacks, and development, the final round offers up some great local clashes.
Women’s Competition
Whakatāne Women have already clinched the Baywide title in style with a perfect record and enjoy the bye this weekend. Congratulations to the Whakatāne squad on a dominant campaign. Whakatāne will head into Intercity with expectations of a repeat to last years title.
The remaining women’s matches will be all about local bragging rights:
Omanu Premier Blues vs Mount Maunganui (Tauranga, 1:30pm) A Tauranga derby where both sides will be eager to finish the season strongly on home turf!
Hepi Sports vs Rotorua Aces Women (Rotorua, 3:00pm) A Rotorua local derby with plenty of pride at stake. Hepi Sports have found goals hard to come by this season, so their strikers will be desperate to produce a strong performance in the final round.
The Aces Women have shown better luck in the circle recently and are starting to build some promising combinations. They’ll be looking to finish the competition on a high and continue their upward trajectory.
Men’s Competition
Three great matches will decide key outcomes on the men’s side:
Rotorua Aces Men vs BOP Indians (Rotorua, 1:00pm) This clash carries huge importance as it will decide Intercity qualification. When the Indians are on song, their attack is lethal, but they struggled in the last round to find their rhythm. The Aces have also shown inconsistency and have been working hard to improve team combinations. Expect a hard-fought, intense battle on the Rotorua turf.
Whakatāne Men vs Otūmoetai Blues (Tauranga, 1:30pm) Whakatāne will be determined to avoid the wooden spoon and will be looking to build some winning ways as they head into the Tauranga competition next week.
Mount Maunganui vs Tauranga Old Boys United (Tauranga, 3:00pm) The big one, Mount and United go head-to-head for the Men’s Baywide title. United may start as favourites, but we’re tipping an upset victory to Mount Maunganui to round out the season.
It’s been a rewarding first Baywide season for our Bay of Plenty teams, with plenty of young talent coming through alongside experienced players. This final round promises exciting hockey as teams fight for qualification, pride, and a strong finish.
Get down to your local turf in Rotorua or head to Tauranga to support the BOP crews one last time in the Baywide competition. The atmosphere should be excellent as the season wraps up.
Massive thanks to all of our BOP and Tauranga sides for supporting the Baywide competition this season, we look forward to building on this momentum in 2027.
