Baywide Hockey Round 4 Wrap-up
Mavericks Shine Bright & Seniors Battle Hard Before the Anzac Break
No Baywide games this weekend as we head into the Anzac Day long weekend, a well-earned chance to rest, reflect, and honour those who served. While the Senior Competition takes a breather, it was another big week of action on and off the turf last weekend. Here’s how our Bay of Plenty teams got on in Round 4, plus some fantastic news from the Junior Hockey League finals.
Junior Hockey League Finals – Mavericks Flying the BOP Flag!
Our young talent absolutely delivered on the big stage.
The Mavericks Men went through the entire round-robin unbeaten and capped it off with a strong 4-2 win over the Falcons in the final. The side featured BOP stars Braythyn Lemon, Harmanpreet Singh and Tristian Waaka.
On the women’s side the Mavericks pushed hard but went down 0-1 to the Tridents, with the only goal coming right on the 60th minute. BOP representatives Pia Hohepa (named Women’s Player of the Tournament ,huge congratulations!) and Roimata Brown both shone throughout the campaign.
This success builds beautifully on the Under 18 sides winning their respective competitions at the Hockey Experience tournament back in December 2025. A massive credit to Mavericks GM Darren Smith and all the coaches for their vision and determination to develop and promote homegrown talent across the wider Mavericks region which is providing amazing opportunities for our BOP players. Well done to everyone involved ,you’re making us proud!
Baywide Senior Results – Round 4
Men’s Competition
Tauranga Old Boys United cruised past Otumoetai Blues 10-0.
Rotorua Aces Men picked up a much-needed win, defeating Whakatāne Men 3-1. Goals came from Owen Mitai-Wells, Sam Bocock and Haeata Taylor. Whakatāne’s lone goal from young star Malakai Ogle. The game had a unique flavour with what felt like around 10 umpires on the field, both teams had several knowledgeable players who were more than happy to offer their “expert” opinions from the pitch! Great to see veteran goalie/umpire Paul Wylie back in Goal for the Aces.
BOP Indians went down 1-4 to Mount Maunganui. Karambir “Ricky” Singh scored the lone goal for the Indians in a match where they struggled to find their usual rhythm.
Women’s Competition
Hepi Sports battled hard against Mount Maunganui. The game was locked at 0-0 at halftime, but Mount pulled away in the second half to win 3-0.
Whakatāne Women got the better of Rotorua Aces Women, with goals from Brydie Hopkins, Charlie Douglas and Stacey Mexted. The Whakatāne women managed what their men’s side couldn’t ,securing a solid result against the Aces
Plenty of fight shown across the board by our local teams, with some strong individual performances and valuable experience gained all round.
While there is no Senior Hockey this weekend our Under 18 Representative campaigns will be getting underway on Sunday with the first trial, we are looking forward to some of our rising stars showing their talents on the turf and their passion for the Bay. If you haven’t registed yet, there is still time before Sunday’s Trial :
