BOP Hockey Shines at the 2025 U14 & U16 Regional Indoor Challenge
Under 14 Boys Indoor Hockey Team. December 2025
Bay of Plenty Hockey enjoyed an outstanding weekend at the U14 & U16 Super Regional Challenge held in Taupō on 6–7 December 2025. Three representative teams made the journey north, and they returned with two titles, countless memorable moments, and clear evidence of the strength and depth coming through our indoor programme.
U14 Boys – Champions
The U14 Boys finished the tournament undefeated, recording three wins and one draw to claim the title. Their campaign culminated in a gripping final against Northern Kauri, the only side to take points off them (a 1–1 draw on day one). Leading 3–0 at half-time, the boys faced a fierce comeback as Kauri scored twice in the second half. Thanks to resolute defending and some outstanding saves from goalkeeper Parker Moulin in the closing stages, Bay of Plenty held on for a 3–2 victory and the championship.
Wilson Carter led the tournament scoring with an impressive 11 goals, including an extraordinary six (some say seven!) in the opening match. Midfield captain Ben Snodgrass anchored the side with a calm, mature presence that belied his years, organising play and leading by example throughout the weekend.
The team was coached by two of our current U18 representatives, Rhys Elliott and Lachie Hoggard. It was particularly rewarding to see these young men giving back to the association that has supported their own development, and their enthusiasm and knowledge clearly resonated with the players.
U16 Boys – Champions
The U16 Boys were simply dominant, winning all four of their matches to take the title convincingly. Many of this group were backing up after winning the U14 division in 2024, and the step up in age group did nothing to blunt their cohesion or hunger. Their brand of fast, skilful team hockey proved too strong for every opponent they faced.
Malachi Kenyon-Slade, who joined the squad from Tauranga, finished as leading goal-scorer, while Riley McConnell was another standout performer across the two days.
Long-serving coach Cam Ogle was at the helm once again. Cam has now been involved with BOP indoor representative teams for the past three seasons and has played a pivotal role in growing and strengthening indoor hockey throughout the region. His experience and passion continue to deliver results.
U16 Girls – Strong Development on Display
The U16 Girls team featured a blend of Bay of Plenty players and six draft athletes (three from Waikato, one each from Northland, Auckland and Wellington). For several squad members this was their first exposure to competitive indoor hockey. What stood out most was the visible progression made from match to match; combinations improved, decision-making sharpened, and the team finished the weekend playing their best hockey.
The squad was guided by head coach Jaco Erasmus, ably supported by Scott Wrigley. While the results may not have reflected it on the scoreboard, the weekend was an invaluable learning experience and a clear sign of promising talent emerging.
Looking Ahead
This Super Regional success provides excellent momentum as we now turn our attention to the upcoming U18, Open, and Masters indoor tournaments in January 2026. With two trophies already in the cabinet and a host of players gaining high-level experience, Bay of Plenty Hockey is in a strong position heading into the new year.
A huge thank you to all the players, coaches, managers, and families who travelled to Taupō and contributed to a memorable weekend. The pride in wearing the BOP colours was evident for all to see.
Well done everyone – here’s to more success in 2026!
